Storytelling Team
Words Alive is seeking energetic, responsible volunteers with strong writing and organizational skills to help us tell the Words Alive story through compelling stories on our blog to be shared across multiple platforms. At Words Alive, we know that the power of a good story has the ability to change lives. Volunteers on the Storytelling Team research stories, write long-form content for Words Alive’s blog, and post the completed stories, with pictures, to the website.
Storytelling volunteers are supervised by Words Alive’s Institutional Giving and Donor Communications Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Working with other members of the Storytelling Team, brainstorm blog post ideas and identify the next best story to share with the Words Alive community.
Conduct the research necessary to draft stories. Research may include interviewing members of the Words Alive community (e.g., staff, volunteers, program partners, donors), reading reports, and online research.
Draft long-form content for the Words Alive blog.
Work with other members of the Storytelling Team to edit the draft for clarity and alignment with Words Alive brand guidelines.
Upload final draft onto the Words Alive blog, adding photos and links.
A Great Storyteller has:
Fantastic writing skills
Ability to conduct online research
Interest in conducting online, phone, and/or in-person interviews
Strong time management skills
Motivation to complete asynchronous, self-paced work
Willingness to engage in the editing process
An eye for detail
Experience with or a desire to learn online platforms such as Google Drive, Zoom, and Squarespace
Commitment to Words Alive’s mission to connect children, teens, and families to the power of reading.
Commitment:
Position is 100% virtual and self-paced.
Take on at least one project per month.
2-5 hours per month.
Requirements:
Volunteers must provide their own computer and have access to the internet.
Onboarding and Training:
Attend a 30-minute volunteer orientation and submit a volunteer application.
Review and sign volunteer handbook.
If under 18, submit a youth waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
Complete a 30-minute online training specific to Storytelling Volunteers.
